Free resources

This section, and chapter in the book, is actually about a rabbit; the best free resource you ever can find when running a venture during today´s digital times. But how to use it to your own advantage?

  1. As the cloud replaces USB sticks in “Your Future in the Pocket” (related to Moore’s Law), providers are now delivering faster internet speeds at the same price, thanks to advancements like 5G.

The benefits of 5G, including faster speeds and low latency, open up a realm of possibilities in this digital era. This becomes particularly crucial for autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars, and enables rapid communication with other systems.

An exemplary case is the development of a system empowering visually impaired Paralympic champion Tristan Bangma to solo race at a velodrome. This groundbreaking prototype, integrating new and existing technologies like Lidar sensors and GPS, offers a unique experience for visually impaired cyclists like Bangma. The speed and stability of the 5G network play a pivotal role in this process. Considering these advancements, what other ventures do you foresee benefiting from the enhanced speeds and low latency in the future?

    1. Hey Andreas!

This story is quite interesting and something to think about. I think that maybe one similar industry would be the gaming industry. Cloud gaming services can leverage 5G to provide high-quality, low-latency gaming experiences on a variety of devices, reducing the need for powerful local hardware. Gaming can then be played by anyone who wishes to do so!

      1. I agree with you Linta, I think it also helps developers a lot, cloud gaming can greatly reduce some of the duplications of work that goes into multi-platform projects to accommodate different platform compatibility and hardware requirements.

    2. Thank you for sharing. I think the remote learning can become more interactive and accessible, even in bandwidth-intensive scenarios like streaming high-quality educational videos or live lectures. Related enterprises will be helped by 5G. Because education is the foundation of a country.

  2. The cyclist Matej Mohoric developed a technique of descent to have the most aerodynamic position possible. He would reduce the frontal area of his body at maximum by sitting down on the frame of the bike, and lowering his body so low as possible. In this way, he would gain precious seconds that put him ahead of the others without spending any energy just by positioning himself better. In this way, he wasted less energy in aerodynamic losses, which can then be seen as free energy. The technique is very dangerous and many cyclists do not dare to do it. This style of descent led him to win several races in the last couple of years, against a pack of very talented and powerful cyclists, which Mohoric considered to be stronger physically than him. Later his style of descent was banned for safety reasons, but Mohoric kept the wins.

    1. Matej Mohoric’s innovative aerodynamic descent technique, though risky, proved to be a game-changer, allowing him to secure victories by minimizing energy loss. His strategic positioning granted him precious seconds against stronger competitors. Despite the subsequent safety ban on his unique style, Mohoric’s wins remain a testament to the ingenuity that can disrupt conventional norms in sports.

    2. If we view risk as a cost, this innovation may not be entirely free, especially when it comes at the expense of lives. This is why other players are unwilling to attempt it and it is banned, aligning with the proverb “free things are often the most expensive.”

  3. NASCAR is a popular stock car racing series in the United States. Unlike other racing series, there is a regular season and playoffs in the NASCAR season (similar to other North American sports). Throughout the regular season, drivers are competing for 1 of 4 spots in the playoffs to win the championship. The final race of the regular season of the 2022 season was held at Martinsville Speedway, an oval track with walls lining the outside (similar to an ice hockey rink).

Before the race, driver Ross Chastain was in 5th place and in order to secure a spot in the finals of the 2022 championship, needed to finish ahead of fellow driver Denny Hamlin in fourth. Heading into the last lap, Chastain was 2 spots back from Hamlin and seemingly needed to do the impossible to reach the finals.

Due to Martinville’s oval setup, drivers typically go full speed down the straights and slow down so they can make the corners. Heading into the final turns, Chastain decided not to slow down but speed up and use the wall to catapult him around the oval across the finish line, passing five cars in the process. Not only did he finish ahead of Hamlin, he set a lap record at the track, with a lap time over 1.5 seconds faster than any other driver that day.

After the drivers had finished hundreds of laps around the same track using the same methods, Chastain found a new method that no other driver dared to try and used it to his advantage.

    1. This is an impressive story although ‘speed up and use the wall to catapult him around the oval across the finish line’ sounds a little dangerous.
It is so interesting that it seems common that both in sports and business, the breakthrough approach is ‘risky’. I see the point here might be the courage and innovation to try out new ideas that no one has done before, which might be a valuable and ‘free’ resource.

  4. A story about a young athlete from a small town, who can’t afford professional running shoes or a coach. Her name is Samara Kelly. She uses the local trails for training and learns techniques from free online videos. Her dedication and innovative use of available resources lead her to win a regional marathon, symbolizing how entrepreneurs can succeed by effectively utilizing free resources.

This story demonstrates the entrepreneurial lesson of resourcefulness. Just as the runner uses what she has available – local trails and free online videos – to train and win, it shows entrepreneurs how they can utilize readily available resources, like open-source software or online communities, to build their ventures effectively.
