Ideas

This section, and chapter in the book, is about entrepreneurial ideas. How to evaluate ideas for a venture? Which ones are good, which ones are bad? How to even find them?

  1. Story 1: Mutual support from competitors
New Zealand’s 400-metre runner Nikki Hamblin and American athlete Abbey D’Agostino collided and fell to the ground during the heats. After the collision, Abbey encouraged Nikki to get up and continue the race. Despite both being injured, they supported each other and finished the race. After the race, the women were praised worldwide for their sportsmanship and support of each other. In entrepreneurship, idea generation is inevitably tough, and when there are short-term failures, help from competitors in the same field may be mutually fulfilling.

  2. What works (and what does not)?
In the Olympic Games of 1912 in Stockholm, the Östermalm Athletic Grounds bore not only witness to impressive feats of strength, dexterity and constitution, but also to a showdown of pistol dueling, this being the third iteration of said sport at the Olympics. Participants wore protective equipment and only used wax bullets, preventing chance at any serious injuries. However, despite how dangerous and exciting this sport may seem, it was not so at the Olympics, as participants shot not at each other, but at plaster dummies at 20 and 30m distance.

12 Years previously, the Olympic games in Paris held a test event (meaning it not yet held Olympic status), that was introduced to be added to the upcoming iterations of the Olympic Games. The sport in question was poodle clipping. 128 competitors had two hours to clip the fur of as many poodles as possible, and while this sport may seem exciting in theory, there were many drawbacks. There were questions about whether they preferred quantity over quality, if all the poodles were the same size, and so on. Avril Lafoule won the gold medal after having clipped a total of 17 poodles within two hours, but despite his impressive feat, the sport was not admitted to the Olympics.

From the previous two examples, we can conclude that some sports work, and some don’t (at the Olympics). In entrepreneurship, it is also important to explore new options and opportunities, and regard all ideas – however, it is also important to think about what works, and what does not. Some ideas need further exploring and several iterations before you can decide, others were a bit obvious from the start. But what is important is to give ideas a chance.

Now envision that climber without ropes or safety gear, ascending with nothing but bare hands and a chalk bag. This is the story of Alex Honnold, a free solo climber whose tale epitomizes trust, skill, and the importance of a reliable support system.

Alex Honnold’s free solo ascent of El Capitan, which can be seen in the documentary “Free Solo,” is a testament to his unparalleled skill and unwavering trust in his abilities. Honnold, meticulous in his preparation and mental focus, executed a climb that was once thought impossible without protective gear.

Kevin Cordón’s story is a testament to the spirit of perseverance and breaking barriers, not just in the realm of sports, but also echoing the ethos of entrepreneurship. Representing Guatemala in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Cordón made a remarkable journey to the semifinals in men’s singles badminton. In each match, especially during the semifinals, his passion was palpable; with every point won, his triumphant shouts resonated, stirring the hearts of spectators. His performance was not just about personal achievement; each step he took on the court was a historic imprint of Guatemala on the world map of badminton, challenging the dominance of traditional badminton powerhouses. This narrative closely mirrors the journey of startups in the business world, overshadowed by the looming presence of industry giants. Just as Kevin Cordón carved out a niche for Guatemala in a sport dominated by a few countries, startups have the potential to make their mark through relentless refinement of their skills and steadfast adherence to their unique vision. In the face of overwhelming odds, startups can garner recognition and amplify their voice globally, resonating loud and clear, much like Cordón’s shouts on the badminton court. His story is a powerful reminder that with determination and passion, even the underdogs can challenge the status quo and inspire a new narrative in any field, be it sports or entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurs, like Honnold, navigate their ventures through uncertain terrains, where the stakes are high, and the margin for error is slim. Yet, it’s their commitment to their vision, coupled with a calculated approach to risk management, that propels them forward, turning seemingly insurmountable obstacles into milestones of achievement.

Her most notable accomplishment occurred in 2013 when she successfully swam from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida, without the protection of a shark cage. This extraordinary feat covered a distance of approximately 110 miles (177 kilometers) and took her about 53 hours to complete. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Nyad was 64 years old at the time, showcasing her incredible endurance and strength. Nyad’s story resonates deeply with the entrepreneurial spirit. In the world of startups and business ventures, entrepreneurs often face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Market conditions, competition, and resource limitations are just a few of the hurdles that can deter the faint-hearted. 7. The Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, considered by many as one of the greatest players of all time, has won 5 Ballon d’Or awards, 33 senior trophies and over 300 trophies and medals in his career. He holds the record for most goals in UEFA European Championship and the FIFA Club World Cup. He is quoted as saying “Dreams are not what you see in your sleep, dreams are things which don’t let you sleep.”

When evaluating entrepreneurial ideas, Ronaldo’s approach is a valuable guide. It encapsulates the essence of entrepreneurial spirit—those ideas that ignite a fire within and refuse to fade away. An entrepreneur must have conviction in the idea and believe it is possible to make it a reality. The drive to succeed and the hunger to reach the goal must be present in order to fuel the internal motivation.

Just as Ronaldo meticulously assesses his performance on the field, entrepreneurs must carefully evaluate the viability and potential of their ideas. The ones that resonate deeply, that keep them awake at night with excitement and possibility, are often the ones worth pursuing. These ideas have the power to drive passion and fuel innovation, propelling entrepreneurs towards their goals with unwavering determination.

Formula 1, the biggest name in the racing category of sports, is a battle of technology, strategy, and skills. In the 2020 edition of the Italian Grand Prix held in Monza, Italy, was one of those extraordinary grand prix with incredible results. Our main character is Pierre Gasly, driving the AT01 for the team Alpha Tauri, they are not the best team finishing only 7th out of 10 in the constructor championship. However, this one race something different happened, Kevin Magnussen HAAS car broke down and has to stop in front of the pitlane bringing out the safety car. Seeing this, the AlphaTauri team commanded Pierre Gasly to come into the pit to change his tyres, however not long after that, the pit entry was closed due to Kevin Magnussen’s car being stopped in near the pit lane entry. Not noticing this, Lewis Hamilton, the person that was most likely to win the race went into the pit, this incident caused him to get a 10 second stop/go penalty. The closed pit entry also hindered other teams strategy not being able to change their tires while there is a safety car, which is the best time to go into the pit. One lap before the safety car comes in, the pit entry is open again, allowing all the other drivers to go into the pit, this promoted pierre gasly into the 3rd position. Not long after the safety car go in, Charles Leclerc crashed into the barrier bringing out a red flag, which means that everyone has to go into the pit and stop while the barrier is being repaired. After the red flag, the restart is a standing start, which means it is similar to the race start in the beginning, being in 3rd position, Gasly swooped in on the 2nd Position car being Lance Stroll and cemented his position on the grid to be 2nd, Lewis Hamilton then needed to do his penalty which promoted Gasly to first. From then on it was a battle with Carlos Sainz in the Mclaren for the win, but in the end due to their strategy with enough tyre wear they are able to win the grand prix.

  9. Everyone knows the story of the football great Lionel Messi. When he was 11, he was diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency. As you can imagine, at the time, especially in South America, a good build was required to become a footballer. Since Messi had GHD, he was not expected to succeed and his family was also poor to afford a treatment. But this did not deter him, as he kept on playing and found his own playing style which took advantage of his height. Then at the age of 13, Barcelona signed him, and well, the rest was history.

There are two take aways in this story. First, Messi Messi did not get disheartened with his diagnosis, and followed his dream by converting his disability to an advantage. So, an entrepreneur needs to fully understand his strength and weaknesses and find ways to use them to his advantage.

Second, Barcelona took a risk in signing him at a time when giving contracts to teenagers, especially that young was not common. But they were willing to take the risk by seeing his football ability. So an entrepreneur should be willing to take risk, but only after proper analysis.

  10. Surya Bonaly is a French figure skater who made history in 1998 for landing a back flip on one skate at the Nagano Winter Olympics in Japan.
She sustained a terrible injury causing her achilles tendons to be ruptured prior to the competition, which meant that she would be unable to perform a triple Lutz , a move fundamental to scoring enough points to stand on the podium. She decided to risk it all and instead insert a back flip in her routine, something extremely dangerous. Due to the risk of competitors dying from landing head first on the ice, this move had been banned since 1976. However, since what was banned was the regular backflip, landing on two skates, she thought her surprise move could still earn her a high score given that she would land on one skate, and be the first competitor to do so.

The judges did still consider that she broke the rules and deduct her points instead, causing her to end in the 10th position only. However, the public was stunned and absolutely loved her performance, earning her great popularity in France in particular, where she was the first black woman to represent the country in the Winter Olympics.

It is a story of risking it all when having your back against the wall, which is a great lesson for entrepreneurship and business where knowing how to take risks is crucial.

But there are many players who plan their careers in such a way that when they retire they have a proper source of income. One of the best examples in David Beckam. When he realised he was past his prime, he decided to play his final years in the relatively unknown league of MLS. Many people criticised his decision to leave Europe and play for a “minor” league. But he had a proper plan. He knew he had many fans and following such that wherever he went, he could the league views. And since the football was growing in US, he decided to come to MLS to play on the condition that after he retires, he could buy a club for about $25 million. And he did just that and started InterMiami club. Now, the club is worth over $1 billion dollars.

The other French figure skater who really won over the public in the 1998 Winter Olympics is Philippe Candeloro. He became very famous with the younger generation by using popular soundtracks for his performances, earning him the love of the younger and older generation. He developed his signature move, in which he spins and drops to his knees on the ice, by accident during training. This is good metaphor in the field of entrepreneurship, where a lot of innovations spurs fro accidents. Instead of focusing on the negative aspect of a failure, recognizing the potential in the unexpected and making it one own’s has been the key to many great successes. It is also interesting that it was once again a move that went against the rules, as it was mandatory to normally have only skates touching the ice at all time. It also goes to show how entrepreneurs can also benefit from standing on the edge and being ahead of changes in norms and and maybe pushing for changes in the law.

The last story would also be about pushing for a change in the rules with the example of trans athletes competing in the gender they identify with. It opens an interesting conversation about how sport competitions should look like in the future. Rules and laws are a reflection of society’s norms, and as society changes, it is natural for rules and laws to evolve as well. The legalization of cannabis in many US states aligned with its common consumption. Instead of conducting a war on drug against it, its legalization opened a very profitable industry. What if drugs were legalized and regulated, would the young dealers become successful entrepreneurs instead of future convicts/dead at 20 years old?

  19. The first story I want to tell is about Joe Davis, the father of modern snooker, a pioneer who led everyone into a new era of snooker.
In all official competitions, Joe Davis has never lost a single game, and in every final, there is a huge gap between the champion and the runner-up. Davis’s brilliant record of winning 15 consecutive world championships is still unmatched. It can be said that he was completely ahead of his time.
In terms of technical indicators, he set a total of 687 hundred-shot records, and in 1955 he set the first full score record in an official competition in snooker history – 147 points in a single stroke. Until then, this number existed only in theory.
How did he achieve this series of achievements?
He was the first player in snooker to realize the importance of consistently controlling the movement of the cue ball, or a player who truly had an overall view of attack – he had already calculated it in his mind before shooting a perfect score of 147. All dribbling routes throughout the game!
Before this, the common strategy for players to play was to make a snooker defense (this is also the original meaning of the word snooker, “blocking”) after pocketing the obviously scoreable ball, so the single shot score was low. Joe Davis controlled the movement of the cue ball through good awareness and superb stick skills, and scored consecutively, which greatly improved the technical level of snooker.
And more importantly, he captured the core of competitive sports and made the cake bigger. His strategy also greatly increased the intensity and spectacle of the games, attracting unprecedented audiences to pay for game tickets, followed by brand sponsors, thereby increasing the athletes’ prize money and naming fee income. This in turn promotes the improvement of professional athletes and puts the sport into a virtuous cycle of development.
From him, we can understand the principles of innovation and entrepreneurship – only by having the courage to break tradition, planning continuous attacks, and striving to provide core value can we lead the industry to a new peak.

  20. The second story I want to tell is about:

“The Billiards Emperor”, “The King of the Crucible”, Stephen Hendry

The best superstar in the world in the 1990s and maintains absolute dominance! He won 36 ranking tournament championships, still unmatched in snooker history. His influence is not only reflected in honours but also his innovation of snooker.

After Hendry retired, the WPBSA official website praised him as the “greatest” player: “He changed the way snooker is played, turning it into a strategic and tactical sport rather than a pure attack in a short period.” The official website also used 5 superlative adjectives to summarize Hendry’s achievements in 2012: “In a quarter of a century, he turned himself into the greatest player and won the most world championship titles, the most ranking event trophies, the most single-stroke century breaks, and the most prize money.”

The reason why Hendry became the “greatest” is because he was not satisfied with the status quo, but constantly innovated and planned to elevate snooker strategies and tactics to a new level. In entrepreneurship, disruptive thinking and strategic changes are also the keys to success.

  21. The third story I want to tell is still Hendry’s, but this time the late hero ushered in the most ruthless abandonment by the goddess of victory.

In 2012, after losing 2–13 to Maguire in the quarter-finals, Hendry announced his retirement from professional snooker at the age of 43, citing dissatisfaction with his standard of play and difficulty balancing competitive, commercial, and personal commitments.

But in the strange year of 2020, 8 years after retiring, Hendry unexpectedly announced his comeback, but his professional performance could no longer reproduce the glory of his early career. In the 2021-2022 season, he participated in multiple ranking events, but failed to enter the top 64 in any competition. Although he won some preliminary matches, he lost all further matches to his opponents. He also failed to make significant progress in the 2022-2023 season, experiencing a series of defeats, including: At the 2023 World Snooker Championship, he lost 4–10 in the first qualifying round to his ex-wife’s nephew James Cahill, after which he said he still had “a very distant dream” that he would one day compete at the Crucible again.

In a podcast interview following his defeat to O’Brien—at which point he had won just three of 18 matches since rejoining the professional tour—Hendry said he was considering retiring again, calling his performances “embarrassing” and acknowledging that he had not been practising for events.

In competitive sports, weakness is the ORIGINAL SIN.

In the ever-changing world of modern snooker, resting on the laurels of the past will not work, even for superstars with brilliant careers before.

This story tells us that past success cannot ensure future glory. Success requires constantly adapting to changes in the times and bravely facing new challenges. Only those who are ahead of the times and are not satisfied with the glory of the past have a probability of winning or even survival.

It is not a pity that your era has passed, but it is a pity that you can’t tell which year it is now.

“Weakness and ignorance are not barriers to survival, but arrogance is.”

  22. One of the most celebrated underdog stories in football is the tale of Leicester City in the 2015-2016 English Premier League season. Before the season began, Leicester City was considered a likely candidate for relegation and faced odds of 5000-1 to win the league. However, under the management of Claudio Ranieri, they defied expectations. Key players like Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and N’Golo Kanté played pivotal roles. Their consistent performance, team spirit, and tactical discipline led them to clinch the Premier League title, completing one of the most remarkable underdog stories in sports history.

The Leicester City 2015-2016 Premier League victory is a powerful metaphor for entrepreneurship. Just as Leicester, with their modest resources and low initial expectations, triumphed over well-established, wealthier teams, entrepreneurs often start with limited resources and face seemingly insurmountable odds. Leicester’s success was built on a combination of strategic leadership, team cohesion, and maximizing the potential of undervalued players. Similarly, successful entrepreneurs often thrive by identifying unique market opportunities, fostering a strong team culture, and efficiently leveraging limited resources. This story exemplifies how determination, innovation, and a well-executed strategy can enable an underdog to overcome industry giants.

  23. One of the most iconic examples of disciplined sportsmanship is the story of Japanese marathon runner Shizo Kanakuri. During the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he disappeared during the marathon race and was considered missing for 50 years. In reality, he had passed out due to the heat and later returned to Japan without notifying officials. He was later invited back to Sweden in 1967 to complete his race. His total marathon time was recorded as 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes, and 20.3 seconds – the slowest marathon in history. Kanakuri’s story is not only about the discipline in sports but also about integrity and the unique resolution of an unfinished journey.

Shizo Kanakuri’s story in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, where he disappeared during the marathon and completed it 54 years later, is a powerful metaphor for entrepreneurship. It symbolizes the journey of an entrepreneur, where the path to success is not always direct or easy. There can be unexpected setbacks and long pauses, much like Kanakuri’s marathon. However, the true essence of entrepreneurship, as in sportsmanship, lies in perseverance and the determination to finish what you started, regardless of the time it takes or the obstacles encountered. This story embodies the spirit of resilience and commitment that is essential for any entrepreneur.
