Teams, Leadership

This section, and chapter in the book, is about the team you might need, and the leadership that team can have use of. Or, is it actually instead about ships just arriving late?

  1. A real team is stronger than the sum of its members

Think of a relay race, where each runner passes the baton to the next. Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary marathoner, says, “You cannot train alone and expect to run a fast time. There is a formula: 100% of me is nothing compared to 1% of the whole team.”

Picture this like a relay team, where every runner contributes a part, and together, they achieve something great. Kipchoge’s words mean that teamwork is stronger than individual effort. He’s a marathon champion, but he knows the team, seen and unseen, is crucial for success.

Just like a relay team relies on everyone working together, Kipchoge tells us that a united team, whether in sports or anything else, can achieve amazing things. It’s about working together, supporting each other, and reaching heights that solo efforts can’t. When a bunch of people team up, it’s more than just adding their strengths together. The team boosts each person, making them stronger together than they would be on their own.

    1. I like this perspective! Your analogy with the relay race and Eliud Kipchoge’s wisdom captures the essence of teamwork.
It’s a powerful reminder that collaboration isn’t just about combining individual strengths; it’s about elevating each other to achieve something greater.

    2. I totally agree! In France, we have a saying illustrating this stating that alone we might go faster, but together we go further. It also relates to this idea of understanding cooperation as a strength rather than a liability.

  2. Strong teamwork helps to overcome challenges that individuals cannot handle.

Climbers face unpredictable and perilous challenges when climbing at high altitudes, so teamwork and leadership are essential. To face unpredictable challenges, they usually work in groups, share experience and knowledge, and wear protective gear. In some cases, they use ropes and safety equipment to keep the team safe and continue the climb.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are the first people to successfully summit Mount Everest. They supported each other during the tough way up to the world’s highest mountain in 1953. One example is when they encountered a formidable 40-foot rock wall that blocked their path. Using skills and experience from previous climbs in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, Edmund Hillary wedged his hands, feet, and shoulders into a narrow crevice between the elevated ice and rock, effectively leveraging against the wall. Then he used a rope to pull Tenzing up, allowing them to climb the final 300 feet together.

This is one of the many stories of Hillary and Tenzing’s seamless teamwork and collaboration, as they triumphed over one of Mount Everest’s most difficult stretches. When it comes to teamwork, if we bring out the strengths and experiences of each team member, the team will be able to complete tasks that one person cannot.

    1. A really good example Shuxin, the story beautifully demonstrates the strength of teamwork. Hillary and Tenzing’s successful summiting of Everest in 1953 stands as a testament to the idea that in facing unpredictable challenges, teamwork is the key to triumph. In entrepreneurship, collaboration and teamwork are equally crucial, and enable individuals to navigate the unpredictable challenges of building a business and achieving success together.

      1. I agree totally Anaoum. It is also a good example of something that we, if just looking at the surface of it, might think to be a “one-person-thing” but instead being a “team-thing”, at least can become much stronger if we instead think of it as a “team-thing” (climbing; is not that just for “lone wolfs”?). And the same goes for a lot of things in an a venture.

In practice that means; we, by ourselves, can actually in some sense decide: “Do we think about what we actually do as something we can do individually, or do we instead prefer to think about it as a team-thing”? Well, no-one really knows a good answer to such kind of a Q in a specific case. But we can at least observe the fact that it would have become really hard for these people to get up on the top of Mount Everest if not thinking about climbing as a “team-thing”. So perhaps the answer to such Q lies in another Q: “how far do we wan´t to go?” 😉

  3. Sachin Tendulkar: Generational talent as a player but mediocre leader?

Sachin Tendulkar, often hailed as one of the greatest cricket players ever in history, faced challenges as the captain of the Indian team. Despite his exceptional individual talent, leading and motivating a team proved difficult for him, emphasizing that prowess as a player does not seamlessly translate into effective leadership. Tendulkar’s remarkable career includes numerous records, such as being the first to score one hundred international centuries and holding the record for the most runs in international cricket. However, his foray into captaincy highlighted the complex dynamics of leadership in team sports.

The lesson to be drawn in an entrepreneurial setting is that individual brilliance doesn’t automatically predict great leadership skills. An entrepreneurial success involves more than personal expertise; it involves leadership skills, effective communication, and motivating the entire team.

I quite enjoyed this story. It is indeed true that everybody may not be a great leader despite having amazing skills in their field. I totally agree with your point! Leadership skills are entirely different, and I do believe that, just like any other skill, it is possible to develop them. Looking from an entrepreneur perspective, it might indeed be one of the most important skills.

  4. Team Triumph: The 2004 Detroit Pistons

Let’s talk about the 2004 Detroit Pistons in basketball.
They did something special by winning the championship without having any superstar players. Instead, they focused on working together as a team.
Chauncey Billups, the team’s point guard, emerged as a leader both on and off the court.
His ability to guide the team, make crucial decisions, and foster a cohesive atmosphere was instrumental in their success. The Pistons’ coach, Larry Brown, emphasized teamwork over individual glory, and this philosophy resonated throughout the roster.

Reflecting on this, it becomes evident that the success of the Pistons was not solely dependent on one superstar but on the synergy between the leader (Billups), the coach (Brown), and the entire team. Each player had a unique role, and their combined efforts led to victory.
In the entrepreneurial realm, a similar principle holds true. A successful business often requires a leader who understands the strengths of the team and can effectively guide them toward a common goal. The leader must recognize that the team’s collective skills, rather than individual brilliance, drive success.

  6. The New England Patriots’ comeback victory in Super Bowl LI in 2017 is a remarkable story of teamwork and leadership. Facing the Atlanta Falcons, the Patriots found themselves trailing 28-3 in the third quarter, in a seemingly insurmountable position.

However, led by their veteran quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots mounted an unprecedented comeback. Brady’s exceptional leadership on the field was complemented by the collective effort of the entire team. With just over two minutes remaining, Brady threw a pass that seemed destined to be intercepted. Yet, wide receiver Julian Edelman made an incredible effort, diving and catching the ball just inches from the ground. This pivotal moment extended the drive, allowing the Patriots to score and eventually force the game into overtime.

In overtime, Brady did a game-winning drive that concluded with running back James White scoring the touchdown. The Patriots secured a 34-28 victory, completing the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.

  7. This story is about tough happenings in the early sporting career of Kevin de Bruyne, Belgian footballer, events that shaped his leadership skills in some way. To pursue his development, he left home at 14 and by 15, he was living with a host family. After a year, even though in his opinion everything was going all right for him, his host family did not want to host him anymore the year after, as they thought he was very silent, introvert and shy, which was difficult for them to be around. This affected him a lot, and kept it inside for a few years.
Later on, he became a good young footballer, and to continue developing, he was sold to Chelsea, top European club, joining a former teammate Thibaut Courtois, also a national team colleague. A year later, it was revealed that De Bruyne’s girlfriend of the time cheated on him with Courtois, a betrayal that is hard to process, especially since the two players are still colleagues today in the national team and have to work together, while being two of the best players the team has.
In early 2015, when Kevin was 23, Junior Malanda, a Belgian teammate and friend of De Bruyne died in a car accident, in the middle of a season where the team was performing really good. From this loss, the team found a deep motivation to achieve their goals in honour of the late player, while Kevin was that year elected as the best player of the season.
These three stories affected the player’s personality without a doubt, by understanding how to sound his voice and let people understand who he truly is, and then not having counterproductive forces working unnecessarily against him, by then being able to manage his personal life aside from the professional environment he was in, towards the benefit of the whole team, and finally being able to perform at best level even when tough consequences affect one’s life. Today, he is the captain of his club, Manchester City, captain of the Belgian national team, and considered as one of the best players in the world.

  8. In the world of team sports, the strength of a team is often mistakenly equated to the sum of its individual members’ abilities. However, Portugal’s victory in the 2016 European Championship, particularly against a favored French team, challenges this notion. The setting was France, Euro 2016, where Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, was not considered the strongest contender compared to the star-studded French squad.

The final match took an unexpected turn when Ronaldo was injured early in the game. Contrary to expectations, Portugal’s performance did not diminish but instead, the team displayed remarkable synergy and resilience. This culminated in Eder’s extraordinary goal during extra time, securing a victory that seemed improbable after Ronaldo’s exit.

This event illustrates the concept of team synergy, where collective effort produces a result greater than the sum of individual skills. Portugal’s victory was not just about tactical discipline or defensive solidity; it was a testament to the power of teamwork and strategic adaptability. In contrast, France, despite its individual talents, failed to capitalize on its apparent advantage, highlighting that individual brilliance is not always sufficient for triumph.

Portugal’s journey in Euro 2016 serves as a powerful narrative about the significance of unity and strategic harmony in achieving success. It transcends the realm of sports, offering insights into team dynamics in various contexts. The victory vividly demonstrates that the true strength of a team lies not merely in the abilities of its members but in their collective effort and shared determination.

    1. How interesting. Do you think that Ronaldo actually was in the way for the other players to ”step forward” when he himself was on court? Could If even have been so, even though Ronaldo himself had been working hard for that not being the case?

Sometimes strong people get in the way, even If they not want to be in the way.

Have the other players for instance afterwards comment about all this?

I think this story tells us mostly something about surprises. Nobody would expect the team to succeed without him, and yet they did! Liking it to entrepreneurship, we can see in many of the examples Henrik has already told us about, that evaluating a team and a situation is incredibly difficult for all, even for the dean of Harvard. With this in mind, we can assume Eder’s strategy, and the inverse of the title of a very specific book: Shoot first, aim second

      1. You are right; sometimes we can actually hit bulls eye by shooting first and aiming second. 😉 And circling back that issue to leaderhip, here is an interesting, and among academics in Leadership globally well known, story: Professor Jim March in California/Stanford ones developed a Model called ”The Garbage can model” (if you Google it you Will find it). The Idea behind it is this…1. We already have ideas for a lot of solutions on problems (just lying around in our own ”garbage can”). 2. Then we pick one up, and search for a problem that this solution can solve…(it literarly means ”solutions first, problem second”, not ”problems first, solutions second”). So…there you see…even in Leadership you sometimes can gain by ”reverse thinking”. March really became famous for that model, even having a physical Garbage can in his office in order to remember himself. And the model, actually sometimes has a really good point. 🙂

Jamaica: A tropical island with no snow, no history in winter sports, and certainly no bobsled tradition. The odds were heavily stacked against the Jamaican team, who were viewed as novelties rather than serious contenders.

Coach Howard Siler, an American, was tasked with training a group of sprinters from Jamaica, most of whom had never seen snow before. The challenges were immense, from fundraising to adapting to a sport so foreign to their culture. They faced ridicule and skepticism, with many dismissing their efforts as a mere publicity stunt.

The key to their success wasn’t just about Siler’s coaching prowess but the belief he instilled in his team. Siler emphasized the shared goal of making history, focusing on the journey rather than just the destination. The Jamaican bobsled team became a symbol of resilience and determination, embodying the spirit of the Olympic Games.

The Jamaican bobsled team’s story underscores the power of unconventional leaders and the impact they can have on a team’s success. It also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, resilience, and the belief that even the most unexpected contenders can rise to greatness.

With a history marked by turnover in leadership, the 1,200-strong team faced a critical juncture that demanded a new approach to leadership.

Zak Brown, the latest captain at the helm, stepped into a team plagued by a severe resistance mentality and a morale that had plummeted to unprecedented depths. The repercussions of years of mismanagement had instilled a profound skepticism among the team members toward their leaders.

Recognizing the uphill battle ahead, Zak Brown understood that trust was not something that could be assumed; it needed to be earned. The demoralized staff, scarred by past experiences, couldn’t be expected to rally behind him or his strategies right away. Brown embarked on a mission to win their support, understanding that only with a united front could they face the challenges ahead.

As the 2023 season kicked off, McLaren found itself far from the front of the grid. In the Bahrain Grand Prix, their lead driver, Lando Norris, crossed the finish line in a disheartening 17th place. The pressure was on, and Brown’s leadership was put to the test.

Rather than succumb to the challenges, Brown’s team took bold action. Recognizing the need for a culture shift, they actively sought diverse opinions from team members, fostering an environment where every voice was heard. It wasn’t about imposing strategies from the top down; it was about collaborative problem-solving.

Midway through the season, McLaren, under Brown’s leadership, found the winning formula. Solutions emerged, and the team steadily climbed the ranks. By the end of the season, McLaren had defied the odds, securing a commendable fourth-place finish overall.

The story of McLaren’s journey wasn’t just about races won and lost; it was a testament to the transformative power of leadership. Zak Brown, through his strategic vision and commitment to inclusivity, had not only revitalized a demoralized team but had also redefined the narrative of McLaren in the fiercely competitive world of Formula 1. The lesson was clear: in the grand prix of leadership, it’s not just about steering the ship; it’s about inspiring the entire team to cross the finish line together.

    1. I loved the resurgence of McLaren in 2023, and the steps they have taken are massive, but the story propts a question for me: When top-down leadership structures are abandonded, and seemingly the involvement of the leader diminishes, is it then still valid to attribute the success to them?

I would argue that it is still possible, just to a lesser extent perhaps. The leader facilitated the fruitful working climate, which was essential to the succes, but individually their contributions were less influential than those of other leaders in the past.

The success of a volleyball team is a collective achievement, where each player’s role contributes to the overall synergy, proving that true victory is born from unity on the court.

MiHoYo’s three founders, Haoyu Cai, Wei Liu, and Yuhao Luo, all graduated with computer science degrees, but in the specifics of development, their responsibilities differ. Cai, recognized as a brilliant developer, led the creation and modification of the company’s game engine. As a passionate fan of Evangelion, he once declined a leader’s visit because the latter hadn’t watched the anime. Liu, a former student union backbone, took on most of the external promotion work beyond technical aspects. Luo, on the other hand, seems to be a combination of both, balancing external and internal responsibilities.

Of course, relying solely on clear division of labor is insufficient to achieve such a great accomplishment. What moved me the most is their shared love for games, as emphasized by the company’s slogan: “Otaku save the world.” They gradually realized this ideal, and it was the unanimous understanding among the three that led them to reject multiple acquisition offers, each with astronomical figures at the time. From millions to tens of millions, and eventually to a market value in the billions, the cornerstone of their development was the pure and shared passion of the three.

Just like in the business world, an exceptional leader needs to blend the diverse abilities and characteristics of team members towards a unified objective.

Under Ferguson’s guidance, Manchester United not only returned to the pinnacle of English football but also became a powerhouse in Europe and the world. His success lay in integrating players with vastly different personalities into a cohesive team and eliciting their best performances. He emphasized team spirit and mutual respect, which unified the team in the face of challenges. His management style and understanding of team dynamics are exactly what is sought after in the business world. In a business environment, being able to understand and leverage the unique value of each team member, like Sir Alex Ferguson, is key to successful leadership.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s story is not just about football success; it profoundly reveals the essence of leadership. A great leader must have strategic vision and the ability to inspire the potential of their team. His experience tells us that in any field, be it sports or business, successful leadership is built on understanding and respecting team members and maximizing their potential. Just as Ferguson did on the football field, an outstanding business leader should also be able to guide their team to face challenges and achieve goals together.

  20. Football is a team player sport, and this has been proved through numerous events. One of the most notorious events is Leicester City FC’s triumph in the English Premier League 2015/2016 season. Leicester City, a club that had narrowly avoided relegation the previous season, entered the 2015-2016 campaign as 5000-1 underdogs to win the league title. Claudio Ranieri, an experienced manager, was appointed as the head coach.

Ranieri instilled a strong team spirit and emphasized the importance of working together towards a common goal. The team consisted of relatively unknown and undervalued players who exceeded expectations through their dedication, hard work, and seamless teamwork.

In business, as in sports, the importance of building a cohesive team cannot be overstated. Leicester City’s success was rooted in the synergy among players who worked together seamlessly.

  21. Strengths and weaknesses make the team
In volleyball, teams are comprised of at least seven players, of whom six are allowed at a time in the field. Each player has their own role, which divides the tasks the team has to take on together. The outside hitters and libero focus their efforts mainly on defense, covering the field for any attacks from the opponent. The setter is the pivotal player, taking the second ball and choosing which attacker has at that moment the best chance of scoring. The middle blocker, opposite hitter and outside hitters take the opportunity to attack, as well as to block any attacks from the opponent at the net. Now that the basics of volleyball have been explained, you might wonder about the numbers. Why are there seven players for six field positions? This is where the libero comes in.
Usually, a team has one setter, one opposite, two middle blockers and two outside hitters. These roles have to turn clockwise each time, forcing net players to be in the back and vice versa. Some roles, like middle blocker, have been trained to focus on attack and blocking, meaning that defense often lags behind. This is why there is a libero, someone whose role is in defense only, and who can take the lead of the defense. This means that when the middle blocker moves to the back of the field, they are switched out for the libero.
We can use this idea of roles in a team within entrepreneurship as well. Although everyone contributes to the team, we each have our own strengths and weaknesses. It is not bad to admit being not as good in a certain thing as someone else, and letting them help out in that area. That is what makes a team a team, where each member helps the others by what they are good at, and covering the weaknesses of others.

  22. A remarkable feat of leadership I still remember to this day came during the world cup in 2014. The Netherlands played against Costa Rica, and with 0-0 on the board the game looked to be going to penalties. For Costa Rica this seemed almost like a succes already, as The Netherlands were massive favorites in that game. There was however one stroke of genius left to come from the Dutch coach. In the last minute he decided to substitute the goalkeeper. This almost never happens, but looking back on it the decision was very logical.

Jasper Cillisen, the keeper during the game, had never stopped a penalty before. He was the better keeper, so he started the game, but on the bench there was Tim Krul, a famed penalty killer. Not only was the skillset of the keepers best suited to their task in this way, but the also could specialize in their own favorite aspect of the game. Krul ended up stopping a penalty and the Netherlands went through. In the end they reached third place in that tournament.

This anekdote depicts leadership and knowledge of ones people and resources. The right manager will realize what should, and what should note be done by certain individuals. When he divides the tasks correctly, the best results will follow

    1. I like this story a lot, last minute decisions can be very crucial and at first, people that don’t know the team as the coach does may not understand the reason behind it.

  26. Story I: Bring us back to Earth

One real-life story that highlights the importance of teams and leadership is the Apollo 13 mission. In April 1970, the Apollo 13 spacecraft experienced a critical failure while en route to the Moon. An oxygen tank exploded, causing a loss of power, loss of cabin heat, and loss of water supply.

Amidst this crisis, the teamwork and leadership displayed by NASA’s Mission Control team in Houston, Texas, were instrumental in bringing the astronauts back safely to Earth. Led by Flight Director Gene Kranz, the team worked tirelessly around the clock to troubleshoot the issues, devise solutions, and guide the crew through a series of critical maneuvers to conserve power, oxygen, and water.

Despite facing life-threatening challenges, the crew remained calm, resourceful, and worked together to implement the instructions provided by Mission Control.Through effective communication, collaboration, and decision-making, the combined efforts of the Mission Control team and the Apollo 13 crew resulted in a successful return to Earth.
